Recent Info on NAFTA

Recent Info on Nafta Indicates That Big Plans Are in the Works.

The recent info on NAFTA continues to be grim, including lawsuits, lost jobs, lost wages, and the possibility of Mexican trucks exploding onto U.S. highways.

Pro-NAFTA organizations and politicians continue to claim that trade between America and her neighbors increased by big percentages during the 15 years of NAFTA.

This is certainly the case, as when you open up trade and get rid of tariffs, trade is bound to increase, just like pulling sticks off a dam will increase the water flow.

The real effect to study is not the increase in trade, but the fact that the town below the dam is now flooded and people are losing their homes.

The ugly side of NAFTA is still rearing its head, with Mexican truckers just filing a lawsuit against the United States for the amount of $6 billion in lost income due to U.S. highways being off limits for their trucks.

We are Held Hostage

That is the ugly side of NAFTA: companies being able to sue governments for implementing measures that protect their citizens.

President Obama says that he is open to the idea of Mexican trucks on U.S. highways.

Under NAFTA, the United States had until the year 2000 to open her highways to Mexican trucks, but because of the opposition from labor groups and consumer advocates the trucks were never allowed free reign.

The recent info on NAFTA tells us the choice is now between getting sued for billions during a recession or throwing caution to the wind and opening up our country to possibly unsafe trucks.

What is Wrong?

The recent info on NAFTA just spells out what is wrong with legislation that is not checked by representative government.

NAFTA goes around the Constitution and sets up its own playing field.

The American taxpayer will pay with either money or safety. The choice is not a good one.

In addition to the lawsuit, Mexico put tariffs in place for certain fruits, wines, and even washing machines.

This was an answer to the United States not opening up her highways.

These tariffs hurt the U.S. economy and worker even more. There are almost no good options in regards to NAFTA.

In the pursuit of profit, the government never looks at the unintended consequences.

These are the unintended consequences of NAFTA. Americans are now stuck between a bad decision and a worse decision.

Blindly Going Down the Wrong Path

The United States government seems content to continue down this path of disaster.

President Obama, while a candidate, often had harsh words for NAFTA.

Turns out he had those words only in locations hard hit by the loss of manufacturing jobs.

President Obama has recently said that renegotiations to NAFTA must wait.

Americans aren’t the only ones who want NAFTA gone or renegotiated.

The Toronto Star reports that 80% of Canadians say NAFTA has done little to benefit workers and half the respondents want it renegotiated.

Mexican farmers have protested against NAFTA on many occasions.

It is clear that the governments of the United States, Mexico, and Canada are not paying attention to their voting populace.

Who are they paying attention to? Corporations are the real winners under NAFTA.

They are able to get the lowest bottom line and rack up the best profits under the trade agreement..

The recent info on NAFTA tells us that not much is changing even as things continue to degrade economically, health-wise, and with the environment.

Our government seems hell-bent on continuing a policy that has cost over a million U.S. jobs.
