The American Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in the history of the United States.

Many other countries around the world have adopted all or part of the document into their own national declaration.

Even though the founding fathers of the United States were wise enough to establish this country, they didn’t come up with every idea in the declaration on their own.

Concepts from many of the world’s greatest thinkers from modern and ancient civilizations are incorporated into the declaration.

For instance, one of the most important concepts in the American declaration is to ”question authority.”

It was Socrates, a Greek philosopher, who first came up with this idea, or was at least the first to put it into writing.

Without the encouragement to question authority, our founding fathers would never have questioned the way Great Britain presided over us and we might still be under British rule.

The American Declaration of Independence destabilized the old political order and replaced it with new ideas that would free people from Great Britain’s rule and allow them to govern themselves.

Throughout the years, this important document has endured many political and social changes in the United States and yet it still remains one of the basic principles behind the order of our constitution.

Slowly however, the American people have forgotten to keep a wary eye on the government, to take part in the process of balancing the system; we are no longer informed and involved.

Our politicians now work for the bankers and big business, who pay lobbyists to manipulate elected officials while the people are stuck slaving away at their jobs and making barely enough to meet their financial obligations after taxes.

Some Americans think it is time for a new Declaration of Independence from the corrupt politicians, bankers, and big business who are ruling without the knowledge or consent of the general public.

Preamble to the Declaration

The preamble to the American Declaration of Independence brought in a new era, upon which the entire history of the United States changed.

The preamble to the declaration explained why Americans took the step of breaking away from Great Britain, stating their own independence as they formed a nation of their own.

One of the great things about the preamble is it made perfect sense so many years ago and still makes sense today, sending a message to the people of the United States that we have rights, rights which every person deserves.

Not only Americans, but people around the world found the declaration uplifting, particularly in times of oppression.

The words of the preamble have provided inspiration for other people who had their own uplifting message to send, such as Abraham Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King and his speech we now know as ”I Have a Dream,” and for women in America when they were fighting for the right to vote.

History Behind the Declaration

The American Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson in an effort to declare to the world why they wanted to break away from the rule of Great Britain and form their own independent nation.

Jefferson was a lawyer and so the declaration sounds much like a legal brief.

Although Thomas Jefferson drafted the declaration on his own he did have help from some minor players such as Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman.

Jefferson believed the declaration was in no way original, meaning that it didn’t contain political ideals that hadn’t been thought of before.

The content of the document contains a list of objections against King George III such as issues about being taxed without representation, as well as the rationality behind maintaining a standing army during times of peace.

There are some inaccuracies in the declaration. At the time of writing, Jefferson wasn’t composing a historical document, but rather an essay listing the many causes which led to separation from Great Britain.

The declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, at which time separation from Great Britain became official.

Historical Documents of the United States

Although the American Declaration of Independence helped America break away from British rule, it was actually the United States Constitution which founded this country, making it the first independent nation in what was then known as the New World.

The declaration itself has great significance to people everywhere.

It lists justifications of why men had the right to rebel against a government no longer taking their best interests into consideration and which couldn’t guarantee them their unalienable rights.

What the declaration did, in harsh terms, was to accuse King George III of misgovernment by outlining specific issues.

The declaration then went on to provide inspiration to other people, such as the French, who were suffering oppression under the rule of King Louis XVI.

Americans made rebellion seem easy and so, excited by the prospect of “liberty, equality and fraternity,” the French Revolution erupted in 1789.

Today, the declaration is a document that Americans can be proud of and we should be reminded of its existence much more than once each year.

We should remember each day what the founders hoped for us when the declaration and the constitution were drafted, which is a far cry from the life we live today.
