Remember back in the day when you first learned about email and how simple it made getting in touch with your family and friends?

Did you ever stop to think that someone could possibly email wiretapping every single email, sentence, word and even characters you type?

Most of us have never even considered the fact that this has been taking place for a relatively long time.

It is not only the public that has learned that they can benefit through the use of email networks.

The government has found that through email wiretapping a great deal of information could be gleaned concerning matters of supposed national security.

There are many ethical issues that arise however when the dynamics of such a program are closely examined.

First and foremost is the question as to how it is decided as to whom is considered a person of interest as well as what it is that determines who will have their right to privacy violated by this program.

Does the government have specific targets that they wish to look into and only go after emails concerning this individual?

The answer is unfortunately a resounding no; they actually use a broad based system.

Constitution on the Way Out?

This system filters through the millions of emails going through national networks and abroad and looks for certain keywords or phrases that are supposedly terrorism related.

There is no guarantee that this system will not openly go through each of your emails whether they are to your Aunt Sally or your stock broker.

In the Constitution there are certain rights that are guaranteed to the American people.

One such right is the right to privacy. Also included is the right to probable cause.

Probable cause states that citizens cannot be subject to search and seizure unless there is undeniable evidence that leads them to have cause to do so.

The trouble is who censors the government to decide whether or not it is violating our Constitutional rights?

The argument has been made that we must give up a certain amount of personal freedoms so that we can be safe from terrorism on a national and international level. Who is this faceless enemy?

The Real Face on the Enemy

The true enemy may just be the government itself. When a government takes it upon itself to protect all its citizens by micromanaging them on a day to day basis it becomes known as a Nanny State.

When it delves into the personal lives of its citizenry to do so, it then becomes Big Brother. What is next?

Email wiretapping is a true violation of our privacy rights. This is undeniable.

The question remains as to how we can wrest these rights back from the elite government officials who has taken them away in the first place.

Have we allowed this domestic spying to go on for too long to regain control of our rights?

Can We Dig Ourselves Out of the Hole?

We may never be able to keep the government totally out of our personal lives.

We can, however, put out a call for a great deal more oversight into the process of email wiretapping as well as the other forms of domestic spying that are taking place.

It is time to push Big Brother off his high horse. We must stand up and demand the return of our rights as a nation.

If we do not do so soon we will be doomed to become a nation of hideous secrets just like the many countries that we have accused of violating basic human rights.
