How Does the Presidency of the European Union Work?

The Presidency of the European Union is Not What Americans Commonly View as a Presidency.

The European Union is governed by a council made up of the governments of the countries which hold membership.

The presidency of the European Union is the operation of this council, and this rotates between the member countries twice a year.

The presidency is not the responsibility of one man, this task is given to the government of an entire country, which is smart in that there is too much instability if the task is left to a single individual, even if only for a six month period.

They perform this rotation in a well thought out manner, the country who is currently in the presidency works with both the country that held the position before them, and the one which will hold the position after them, so that there is a large amount of consistency in operations.

Also, it is smart to rotate the presidency, because each country will have frequent influence over the direction the European Union is headed.

Perhaps America would benefit by a trio presidency, allowing the presidents, to learn from the mistakes and successes of each other on a first hand basis.

Then again, there are at times presidents serving in the United States which the people want out as quickly as possible.

The European Union has implemented some well thought out strategies for its operations, but are they the first step in the rest of the world following the unionizing concept?

Sovereignty

The presidency of the European union is not an office, but rather a referee position held by the government of an entire country.

This is not something which is placed on the shoulders of a single individual.

A single person would not be able to carry out this position, especially with a six month rotation schedule.

The European Union is governed in a well thought out manner, but does it not take the sovereignty of each country away?

The presidency of the European Union is operated by a different country every six months, so they will have a say in the direction the union is headed.

This fact shows that the different country obviously have different goals.

The goals of an individual country cannot be pursued if they are against the current goals of the union.

This takes away the actual governing capacities of the individual members of the European Union.

The World

The world is not likely to follow the EU in implementing the unionizing concept any time soon.

The self governance of each country is usually too important.

For instance, it isn’t likely that the United States of America would allow another country to provide governance over its interests.

The thought of a unionized world, even if in sections is frightening. The thought of this happening is too similar to George Orwell’s 1984.

His book had the world separated into three world powers.

The governing of Oceania was done by Big Brother who had constant surveillance of citizens and was able to go so far as to control their thoughts.
