The full extent of NSA surveillance is unknown to most.

The task of the National Security Agency was to monitor other governments’ communications and protect the United States, but signs are appearing that the NSA has gone considerably farther.

The warrantless wiretaps debate concerning domestic communications has shown how the resources of the NSA have been applied to Jane and John Doe.

Reports of thousands of calls being monitored have had members of Congress up in arms, and allegations of spying on American citizens in violation of their constitutional rights are rife.

Despite justification by the government concerning their opinion that America is at war with terrorism, the bypassing of the very legal mechanisms designed to protect the innocent while pursuing the guilty has been evident.

Now the NSA also seems to be involved in yet further surprising “extensions” of its surveillance brief.

Eavesdropping installations in the U.K. that send information back to the United States are reputedly being used to spy on industry as well as government.

Turning on Friends and Allies

The original goal of the installations in the North of England was to listen in to conversations in the Soviet Union during the era of the Cold War.

Times have changed and the relationship with Russia has notably improved, but the listening station is still in action.

Officials and lawyers from several European nations have questioned its use.

Allegations have been made that America is now using the equipment to spy on large European corporations.

Specific examples are said to be the loss of defense contracts and aeronautic sales by companies such as Thomson and Airbus to Raytheon and Boeing.

Two-Faced Act from Britain Only Confuses More

German leaders are increasingly suspicious of the risk of being listened to, and the Italian Prime Minister has been asked to obtain clarification from the U.K. Government on what is going on with NSA surveillance.

The fact that the listening stations in their military compound are on British soil is a further source of irritation to the other European nations. Britain appears to be sitting on the fence.

At the same time, it is a member of the European Union, with the privileges and responsibilities that that entails, but also has a “special” relationship with the United States.

The suggestion is that the U.K. is also benefiting from the information collected by the NSA surveillance.

Clinging to a Goal of Spying on Anyone, Anywhere

The United States Government has long understood that political and economic domination go hand in hand.

With the earlier hostilities between East and West superpowers now in the background, the temptation to use the massive investment to tie up the economic loose ends is strong.

Such additional NSA activities are a way of tiptoeing towards a situation where everybody will be monitored, all the time.

Computer processing power is becoming so cheap and so available that the horsepower may well already exist.

Operating systems and desktop tools from companies like Microsoft and Google are already implanted in the majority of PCs in the world, and NSA surveillance has already been linked with both companies.
